Paracetamol is an analgesic and antipyretic. It inhibits the prostaglandin synthesis (responsible for pain) and directly acts on the heat-regulating centres (hypothalamus) to reduce fever by producing sweat and removing body heat.
Phenylephrine is a nasal decongestant. It activates the receptors in the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa that causes constriction of the blood vessels. The constricted blood vessels cause decreased inflammation (by shrinking the inflamed tissues) and increased drainage of the sinus cavity.
Chlorpheniramine is an anti-allergic (anti-histaminic). It binds and blocks the action of endogenous histamine (responsible for allergic symptoms), which eventually leads to temporary relief from the ill effects of histamine.
