Sinusitis is an inflammatory condition of the sinuses. The sinuses are air-filled spaces in the bones of the face and skull, lined with a thin layer of mucus that helps trap dirt, dust, and other foreign objects. When the sinuses become inflamed, mucus can thicken and block the nasal passages, causing nasal congestion, pain, and tightness.
How sinusitis affects the eyes and ears depends on the severity of the condition and the specific sinuses affected. In some cases, sinusitis can cause complications affecting these organs.
Effect of Sinusitis on eyes:
Eye Pain: Sinusitis can cause pain and pressure around the eyes, which can be felt on the forehead, cheeks, and temples.
Blurred vision: When inflammation and pressure affect the optic nerve, vision may become blurred. Redness: Inflammation can also cause redness and irritation of the eyes.
Oedema: Inflammation causes the eyelids to swell, making it difficult to open or close the eyes.
Blocked tear ducts: In severe sinusitis, the tear ducts can become blocked, causing excessive tearing or a runny nose.
Effect of Sinusitis on ears:
Ear Pain: Sinusitis can cause pain and pressure in your ears, which can feel like a dull ache. or tingling.
Hearing loss: Hearing loss can occur when inflammation and pressure affect the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat.
Tinnitus: Sinusitis can cause ringing in the ears, called tinnitus. Dizziness: In some cases, sinusitis can cause dizziness or light-headedness.
Ear infections: Sinusitis can also lead to ear infections that cause fever, ear discharge, and severe pain.
If you experience any of these symptoms, it's important to see your doctor. Sinusitis can be treated with antibiotics, decongestants, and other medications. In severe cases, surgery may be needed to drain the sinuses and relieve pressure in the eyes and ears.
