Cough is our body’s response when something irritates the throat or airways, and cold is a common viral infection of the nose and throat.
Usually, the remedies like cough syrups, steam inhalation, vaporisers, saline nasal spray and khadas are used to treat the purpose.
Home remedies cannot give relief in all conditions. Better to consult a doctor if
- There is difficulty in breathing.
- Noticed yellow or green phlegm and even blood during coughing.
- Develop a fever.
- When you observe wheezing etc.
Home Remedies
Other than medicines and cough syrups, simple home remedies can be practised.
- Pippali (Long pepper)
Pippali is an effective drug in managing cough and chest congestion. Pippali is one of the components in many Ayurvedic medicines because of its therapeutic benefits. It helps to loosen the mucus sothat it can be easily flushed out of the body. It is also beneficial for breathlessness. A pinch of Pippali churna can be taken with 1 tsp of honey twice a day.
- Tulsi
Tulsi is considered the ‘Mother of herbs. It is a natural immune booster. It helps in reducing cough, cold and other respiratory disorders. Tulsi leaf juice can be given with honey, or herbal tea can be prepared out of it.
- Ginger
Ginger has natural anti-viral properties and lowers body temperature. It also treats congestion. Ginger tea can be prepared by boiling 1 tsp of crushed ginger in 1 glass of water. The anti-inflammatory property of ginger can relieve cough and sore throat by reducing inflammation.
- Honey
Honey is one of the most common and age-old home remedies for cough. Studies prove that honey has microbial agents that can treat cough. As mentioned earlier, honey can be given along with pepper powder or dried ginger or even with tulsi juice.
- Salt and turmeric gargle
Gargling gives you instant relief. Gargle by adding 1 tsp of salt and a pinch of turmeric to 1 glass of warm water. Gargling helps pull out excess mucus, and turmeric helps in treating inflammation.
- Golden milk
It's the best remedy for the common cold in kids. Add a pinch of turmeric to 1 glass of milk and boil. Consume when lukewarm. It enhances your immunity power.
Practice these home remedies along with your medications. But do consult a doctor if the symptoms are not under control.
