Overview of Pneumovax 23 Vaccine

Pneumococcal diseases are illnesses caused by pneumococcal bacteria. It includes pneumonia, sinus and ear infections, meningitis and bacteremia (bacterial infection of the bloodstream). Pneumovax 23 vaccine provides protection against 23 types of bacteria that causes pneumococcal diseases.

Pneumovax 23 vaccine should not be given to children below 2 years of age. It is recommended for all adults who are 65 years and above, people with certain medical conditions, and cigarette smokers who are at a higher risk of getting pneumococcal diseases.

Generally, a single dose of the vaccine is necessary. But some people may require a booster dose every 5 years after taking the first dose. People who are 65 years and above should compulsorily get a dose even if they have got one or more doses of the vaccine before in their life.
